Diamonds are easily available nowadays- you can buy diamond encrusted jewelry or loose diamonds from any jewelry shop in your vicinity. Every diamond has a story behind it, the way it has been mined, who all are responsible for its transportation, manufacture and sale and what carbon footprint it gives to the environment.

Most of the diamonds that we use currently are mined ones, they are expensive and people buy them because they are expensive. What most people are unaware of is the price fixing that the mining companies do to control the supply of diamonds in the global markets.  In Western Africa, diamonds are mined illegally and are used to fund armed conflicts leading to civil wars. There is a certain certification to stop the illegal sale of these ‘blood diamonds’, but this has proved to be ineffective in dealing with the menace.

On the other hand, lab grown diamonds, man made diamond do not have any kind of controversy attached to them. They are manufactured in controlled conditions in a lab and are of much better quality than mined diamonds.  Some people label lab grown diamonds as ‘artificial’ but the fact of the matter is that these diamonds are physically, chemically,  and optically the same as mined diamonds.

We, at Riddhi Exports want to spread awareness of the benefits of lab grown diamonds and the fact that they are cheaper than mined diamonds. Whenever you plan to buy diamonds, do ping us and we’ll help you out.  You can also visit our booth at the Hong Kong jewelry and Gem Fair, Booth No. 10N19 to get professional advice for lab grown diamonds and jewelry.

Lab Grown Diamonds – A More Effective Alternatives

Lab Grown Diamonds – A More Effective Alternatives

Current Demand-Supply scenario for diamonds

The diamond is considered a precious stone. Its shine, luster and rarity have fascinated people for centuries.  Previously affordable only to the rich and famous, it is now within the reach of the middle class. Technically speaking, diamonds are not that rare- it’s just a matter of controlled demand and supply characteristics that make them so pricey. An oligopoly of firms control the world’s mined diamonds supply led by the South Africa based DeBeers group, they intentionally jack up the prices to ensure consistent profits for themselves.

Lab Grown diamonds – A more effective alternatives

It is a known fact that diamonds aren’t that rare as they are advertised to be, it is shown that way just to create a feeling of uniqueness (and line the pockets of a few). Diamonds are formed deep in the Earth’s crust, where intense pressure and heat makes carbon atoms to get denser. These diamonds eventually rise up to the Earth’s surface through volcanic activity.

Lab grown diamonds, on the other hand, are made in a way which mimics the way diamonds are formed in nature. They are real diamonds- without the help of specialized machinery or professionals it is impossible to make out the difference between mined and lab grown diamonds.

At Riddhi Export, we want to spread awareness of the benefits of buying lab grown diamonds as against the use of mined diamonds which can be of inferior quality than lab grown diamonds. There are a significant number of people who are not even aware of the availability of lab created or man made diamonds. Riddhi Diamonds wants these unaware customers to know that they have a better alternative than mined diamonds which are more expensive than lab grown diamonds.

Mined diamonds- their current status

Gems and Jeweler have always fascinated people. They have been an exclusive class s for royals and aristocrats for centuries. Precious diamonds were earlier only available in India until large mines were discovered in Southern Africa.  Diamonds are well known for its glow, luster and shine, especially when cut.

The demand for diamonds has been stable for quite some time now, thanks to the concentrated marketing campaign spearheaded by the DeBeers Group after the Second World War. They reinforced the notion amongst the youth that engagement rings must contain diamonds, ensuring a consistent demand for diamonds which continues till today.

Mined diamond sales are controlled by an oligopoly of firms, lead by the DeBeers group and many parts of the diamond sales are controversial, due to the use of slave labor and the fact that illegal diamond mining is funding rebel armed groups in Africa. These ‘blood diamonds’ eventually find way to the market, even legislation like the Kimberley Process hasn’t helped change things. On top of this, there is the environmental damage that diamond mining creates- from air pollution to ecological impact on the environment; the cost to the environment that is caused is massive.

There is a way out. There is one solution which can fulfill the market demand and also not create problems for others or the environment. Lab grown diamonds are a eco-friendly and non-controversial solution to all your diamond needs. They are diamonds which much cheaper and practically the same as mined diamonds.

Pure Carbon Lab Created Diamonds – Kimberly Process- an ineffective stratergy

Diamonds have fascinated people for ages.  They were not easily available, hence were used mainly by royalty. It’s lustre, shine and transparency are a reason people are fascinated by diamonds, especially the extremely rare coloured diamonds. First sourced exclusively from India, diamonds are now generally found and mined from Southern and Western Africa, Russia and Canada. 65% of these diamonds come from Africa, from very controversial circumstances.

Diamonds from Africa are sometimes branded ‘blood diamonds’ as its mining helps finance armed groups seeking civil wars in strife-torn countries like Sierra Leone and the Congo. To help solve this problem, there is a certification called the ‘Kimberly Process’ which certifies that the diamond has not been mined illegally or without approval from the respective Government. This effectively should mean that diamonds mined in conflict areas like Western Africa and the Congo should not enter the market, but there are various loopholes which allow for them to enter the market and be traded freely. In fact, it is estimated that a diamond changes 8-10 hands before reaching the customer.

There have been many instances where the Kimberly Process certification has been ineffective. To curb the influence of separatists, the Zimbabwean Army massacred more than 200 miners and sold their mined diamonds legally with Kimberly certification. There is also the smuggling of diamonds from countries in West Africa to Southern Africa where they are then sold with the Kimberly Process Certification.

The Kimberly process certification has been hopelessly ineffective to combat militancy and human rights abuses in Africa. However, you can be sure that the diamonds you purchase are free from such controversies by purchasing a lab-grown diamond.

Lab grown diamonds are chemically, optically and physically similar to mined diamonds, they are in fact technically diamonds, the only difference is that they are produced in a lab. We at Riddhi Diamonds produce the best quality lab grown diamonds at extremely affordable prices.

‘A diamond is forever’- This slogan is considered one of the best slogans in advertising history, it helped a struggling industry flourish after the World War. Prior to the hugely successful ad campaign by NW Ayer diamonds were worn only by royalty, and the common man did not care about and wasn’t interested in diamonds. The ad campaign put it in the minds of the people that a diamond is necessary for an engagement ring, and it surely became a phenomenal success. The DeBeers group, who had hired NW Ayer for the campaign, benefitted the most by the campaign, seeing an almost 55% increase in sale of diamonds from the pre-war levels.

Of late, there has been much controversy the world over for the use of ‘Blood diamonds’- diamonds which have been mined illegally in West Africa and which are causing civil wars in those countries. There has been alleged use of child labour and slavery in these mines and that the money earned is siphoned off by a powerful few. To counter this, the UN and other international bodies are verifying the source of each diamond, certifying to ensure that no-one was taken advantage of or no government has been troubled for producing the diamond. Even though mined diamonds which are certified ‘conflict free’ the issues with their production remain controversial. A lot of fossil fuels are burnt to mined the diamonds not to mention the environmental issues at the mines.

The sale of mined diamonds is controlled by an oligopoly of firms who set the prices to adjust their vested interests. On the other hand, pure carbon lab grown diamonds do not have any kind of controversies attached to them, they can be bought at a much reasonable price. Next time whenever you need a diamond, do inquire about lab-grown ones and make a decision accordingly.

Diamonds have always been the favorite of the rich. For thousands of years, only the rich could afford to wear diamonds. Diamonds were first mined in India, where they were collected from river and streams. When the supply of diamonds from India dwindled, Brazil became an important source of the diamonds. When the supply there too dwindled then came the diamonds from South Africa, mined by the DeBeers group, which currently holds a virtual monopoly over the supply of mined diamonds today.

The popularity of diamonds rose after World War II, especially due to the hugely successful marketing campaign run by the DeBeers group to popularize diamonds in the US. Before World War II, only about 10% of the engagement rings had diamonds on them, after the War, the demand for diamonds rose to 55% of the pre-World War II levels. Till date there has been resurgence in the demand for diamonds across the world. However, most of the diamonds sold these days are mined diamonds, which have a large carbon footprint. Tonnes of earth are moved to get a single stone of diamonds, when then undergoes major processes on it to get the diamond market ready.

On the other hand, lab grown diamonds that we manufacture at Riddhi Exports are eco-friendly and have a low carbon footprint. Some of you will call these diamonds ‘artificial’ but you need to know that these diamonds are physically, optically and chemically similar to mined diamonds, only a trained export can distinguish between mined and lab-grown diamonds.
